Suggested Ways of Enhancing the
Performance Evaluation Process
(from VT Personnel Department)
- On-going Feedback: Departments may establish some type of feedback
mechanism such as scheduled meetings to discuss performance or other issues.
(monthly, weekly, daily, etc.)
- Interim Evaluations: Evaluations conducted throughout the year in addition to
the annual evaluation. Examples include six month or quarterly evaluations.
- Evaluations may be in the form of a memo or a copy of the performance
evaluation form may be used.
- Self Evaluation: Employees evaluate themselves based on performance
expectations and provide this information to their supervisor. This allows
employees input into the evaluation.
- Upward Evaluations: Allowing staff to have input into supervisors
performance evaluations by completing an evaluation.
- Generic Expectations: Using the same position description and expectations
for employees in similar jobs across departments or functions.
- Team Evaluations: Evaluating a team or work group, this may include
individual evaluation components.
- Keeps Records: Keep daily, weekly or monthly records on what you have done
or accomplished. This will help to remind you & your supervisor at the time
of your evaluation.
- Goals: Discuss or write a list of goals you would like to accomplish in
your job and discuss with your supervisor.
