Everything You Always Wanted to Know About CALSSA

What is CALSSA?

It is the staff association for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Why should you be interested in CALSSA?

The days are gone when you could be certain that if you worked hard you would have a job and good benefits until you retired. Today, even if you do your job exceptionally well you may still lose it, have your benefits reduced or your work environment altered unfavorably due to budget cuts, restructuring, etc. Every staff member needs to be informed & needs to be heard by those who can affect their lives.

What is the purpose of CALSSA?

To communicate issues and information between the staff and administration, faculty and students. To serve as a forum for staff to express their views and to encourage staff participation in college activities, policies and shared governance.

How do you become a member?

All you have to do is be a full-time, part-time, or wage classified employee in the College of Agriculture.

When & where does CALSSA meet?

The last Tuesday of every month in 1810 Litton Reeves Hall, noon to 1:00 PM., VA Tech.

What do you do?

Discuss issues that affect staff: benefits, policy, parking, shared governance, budgets, special projects, etc.

What has CALSSA done for me?

It has informed you about layoff policy, ways to improve your evaluation, helped to get the gym user fees changed, changes in health care benefits, helped increase the importance of staff participation in shared governance through the help of Dean Swiger.
